One thing we sturdy girls really get a kick out of is chopping wood. What??? you say? But that’s a chore. We know. But it’s unanimous around the house: we think swinging that big ol’ maul into a block that’s this big around is nothing short of awesome.

Besides that completely satisfying feeling of utter productivity, I’ve always felt that chopping wood is a good way to meditate. Here you are, limber limbed human, facing an utterly unmovable, solid foe.  Time and again, you win. You win. You win.  Winning feels good, friends, and winning over and over again feels better.  Plus, what better way to channel pent up energy and aggression?

Which is why, a couple of weekends ago, while visiting my mom and sister on an impeccably sunshine-y and very un-January day, all three of us were outside, going to town on the log pile.  Grunting, heave-ho-ing and comparing how quickly and cleanly we could split the biggest of the logs, while the chickens and my mom’s new kitten played around us.  Chatting, laughing, and swinging incredibly sharp objects with as much force as we could muster.

That, my friends, is nothing short of a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

The Sturdy Girl homeyard, still beautiful despite the January browns.

And, will you just look at that sun?

Leon, the mustachio-ed kitten had a grand ol’ time too.

And at the end of the day we had a good stack piled for the January weather that we knew was coming. (this is just the portion we brought to the house, yo).
